An interdisciplinary team at CeMM under the project leadership of virologist and immunologist <a href=\"https:\/\/cemm.at\/research\/groups\/andreas-bergthaler-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andreas Bergthaler<\/a> and computational biologist <a href=\"https:\/\/cemm.at\/research\/groups\/christoph-bock-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christoph Bock<\/a> pledged to investigate SARS-CoV-2 genomes in Austria using cutting-edge next-generation sequencing techniques and viral sequence analyses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main aims are to study mutations circulating in the Austrian population, work closely with epidemiologists and public health experts, and perform in-depth computational analyses to learn about the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and contribute to decipher the underlying mutational dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:6%\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:40%\">\n<p>The project aims for a better molecular understanding of SARS-CoV-2 biology and its transmission and mutational properties in the human population. As of June 2021, the project has contributed the majority (&gt;90%) of SARS-CoV-2 virus genomes from Austria deposited in the public database <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gisaid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GISAID<\/a> and, thereby, contributes to the international research to track SARS-CoV-2 variants and mutations worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarscov2-austria.org\/cemm\/project-team\/\">team of national and international collaboration partners<\/a> from Austrian universities, hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and federal authorities, this project provides valuable insights for health care professionals, epidemiologists and public health experts. We also pursue fundamental scientific questions to understand how the virus evolves during human-to-human transmission using Austrian infection clusters that are epidemiologically-defined at very high resolution.
